After completing her vocal training in Berlin, she initially worked as a concert singer, but in 1919 she was engaged as a soprano at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. She performed there until 1922, singing, for example, the role of “Judith” in Reznicek’s opera *Ritter Blaubart* (from 1920). This was followed by guest appearances at the Semperoper in Dresden, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and the Leipzig Opera House. Hesse enjoyed great success in Wagner roles. In 1923–1924, she made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera as well as at the opera houses in Cologne and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main. Beginning in 1925, she gave numerous Wagner concerts. She was then a member of the ensemble at the Theater in Bonn until 1933. After the National Socialists came to power, she was forced to end her stage career prematurely because she was Jewish.
